I had the honor to photograph the hysterical couple, "Marriage & Martinis". They have a podcast that has blown up with popularity because of their raw, comedic, and honest take on marriage, ALL of which is discussed candidly on their Podcast. I wanted to share some behind the scenes, and final images from the shoot in NYC. Elana Nanscawen, of SuperColorFashionistic styled for the shoot, and we had a blast running around the city! We even ended up at the popular restuarant/wine bar in the west village, St Tropez to end the day and take over their bar for another shoot (thanks, Yohann!).

After we showed up at their hotel room, I decided to shoot the most EMBARRASSING image first (which you'll see below). Adam needed a little reinforcement he said. So we broke into the liquor cabinet....which probably totaled to a months rent in NYC. OOPS. DRINK UP, ADAM!!!

...so now you understand why this took a little "easing into" for this shot ; )

They offered us a Martini, we said yes! Duh.

I used to be so scared of change. But as I look back over the last decade of my life, change is what catapults us into new life experiences, which in return leads to new doors opening, and memories unfolding. Embracing change is such a gift in life. This is exactly what this family did....they embraced their new move coming up and said, "Bring it on!".

I was so thrilled when Kim Lorraine, of Kim Lorraine Photography, asked me to document her family before they move to their new home. I LOVE her work and felt so honored she asked me to be a part of this big change in their life. I adore documentary sessions and I had such a wonderful time capturing all the little memories that will be missed from this home. I'm so happy for their new move, and so excited for all their new memories which they're about to create! Change is awesome. Without change, we'd be stuck forever...

She's a seeress/healer in NYC who is quite incredible. I feel so honored to capture these moments between her and her gorgeous daughter. She was so full of light, wonder, and laughter. It's truly remarkable what Deborah can do. The last session I had with her, I felt weight off my shoulders for months, and filled with such joy! I had the honor of teaching during The SafeHouse workshop for The BabeTown Collective in September. What an incredible experience to be working with so many talented photographers/students during this trip. Not only do I feel as if the students learned a lot, I also learned so much during this workshop! How could you not, so many INSANE educators were involved! Lola Gilbert is the brain behind this amazing group, HUGE thanks to that angel!

I taught on the third day of the workshop, and several students followed me to The Urban Cowboy studio. What a chaotic scene! Thanks to Bianca, of Real Mommy Confessions, it was AMAZING. She volunteered her family to be models. Her family is so full of energy and really adapted well to the mob of photographers, it was paparazzi all over! The students had a blast photographing the chaotic morning scene. Bianca's husband is a Brooklyn firefighter, so we had him bring his gear, made for some fun props.

Some things that unfolded during the shoot:
-The dog almost fell off the counter
-Her son got naked(almost)
-Her son threw Captain crunch all over the room, even at the photographers (hahahah)
-Captain crunch will forever be stored in those floorboards
-The dog pooped colors for days
-Bianca got peanut butter smeared in her face
-The children ate so many donuts, I thought they'd pass out
-Kiddo's took THE BIGGEST NAP EVER after the shoot (I was right about them passing out hehe)

Have you heard of Little Hoboken yet? Well, it's awesome. It's a fabulous source of local information for moms! Little Hoboken will tell you where to eat, drink, shop, and the nearest park bench to cry on when your kid is having a tantrum. We had such a blast running around the town...and of course we had a dance party....what else do you do when it's 32 degrees, windy AF, and FREEZING!!! Here are some of the images from the shoot!

Hmmm...now I have to open the door. When I peek up the stairs, the smell of wood and dust brings me back to my childhood immediately. The way the light was hitting the wooden floor. I gasped. "We HAVE to shoot up here! Get up here!" I know they thought I was nuts, but I didn't care, it was magical. The light!!!! "The attic…the attic…the attic…." I repeat in my head. Who would've thought. We grabbed a blanket, carried the kids upstairs and the dust was flying in the sunlight. It was like watching a scene in a movie...

And these cuties….I can't even take it!! Look at these little ones…my heart melts!

]]><![CDATA[Box of "old junk"]]>Wed, 18 Sep 2013 13:40:39 GMThttps://www.danielleguentherphotography.com/blog/box-of-old-junkI was going through some old photographs over the weekend and stumbled upon some of my 4 year old son when he was a newborn. Although, I'm not going to lie those times were ROUGH and I was in DIRE need of sleep (and probably a psychologist and couple bottles of wine), but more importantly those images just tapped into a part of my mind that I had forgotten about. It had sparked something inside me. I know I never printed them all out, or hung them on my wall or maybe even added them to his baby book (fine, judge me). But it got me thinking, "What is the point of taking all of these images if I'm not printing & hanging these?". Then it hit me, it's maybe 60...70 years from now, when Lochlan is sitting with HIS children or even his GRAND children and going through a box of "old junk". I can hear him now, "Why in the heck would she take so many?! I'll never go through all of these!" But hey, maybe he will. It's those moments when he's curled up on a chair with his coffee in hand on a cold winter morning saying, "what's in this box?".

It's the memories. I take these images because this is time FROZEN on a piece of paper that can be pulled out on a rainy day. It just made me realize that even though I take a MILLION photographs of my own son, it'll be the most important thing to him (or his kids, wife, grandchildren, great grandchildren) someday. I'm not sure about you, but one of my favorite things was finding black & white images of my parents individually when they were young lads. There's something mysterious about seeing them and knowing you weren't even a thought in their mind. It's like back to the future.....kinda ; ) It's beautiful that an image on a piece of paper can evoke such strong emotions. They can tell a story. I guess I have to thank my mom for taking so many images of US when we were little, because I just adore looking at old photographs. That's also the reason I love photography so much. I hope my child, and also all of YOUR children will thank us all for taking these images! Life is a perpetual cycle that can snowball so fast that we lose sight all around us. So slow down....enjoy the small things. Snap a photo, and store it with a smile.
